IPS (In-Plane Switching) was developed by Hitachi in 1996 to improve on the poor viewing angles and color reproduction of TN panels. These improvements came at a loss of response time, which was initially on the order of 50ms. IPS panels were also extremely expensive. Contrast ratio indicates the difference between the brightest part of a picture and the darkest part of a picture, measured in discrete steps, at any given moment. The implication is that a higher contrast ratio means more picture detail. Contrast ratios for plasma displays are often advertised as high as 5000:1. On the surface, this is a great thing. In reality, there are no standardized tests for contrast ratio, meaning each manufacturer can publish virtually any number that they like. To illustrate, some manufacturers will measure contrast with the front glass removed, which accounts for some of the wild claims regarding their advertised ratios. However, during the early 80's timeframe, a tabletop video game called Popeye was made with a color LCD, a device with technology ahead of it's time. Technologies used for portable devices made prior to the 1990s to use color graphics include tabletop video games that use Vacuum fluorescent displays and also, before modern laptop computers that used color graphics, the so-called luggable computer, Commodore SX-64 used color graphics on a mini-CRT. Analysts predicted that MVA would corner the mainstream market, but instead, TN has risen to dominance. A contributing factor was the higher cost of MVA, along with its slower pixel response (which rises dramatically for small changes in brightness). History Raw LCD TFT panels are usually factory-sorted into three categories, with regard to the number of dead pixels, backlight evenness and general product quality. Additionally, there may be up to +/- 2ms maximum response time differences between individual panels that came off the same assembly line on the same day. The poorest-performing screens are then sold to no-name vendors or used in "value" TFT monitors (often marked with letter V behind the type number), the medium performers are incorporated in gamer-oriented or home office bound TFT displays (sometimes marked with the capital letter S), and the best screens are usually reserved for use in "professional" grade TFT monitors (usually marked with letter P or S after their type number). To ionize the gas in a color panel, the plasma display's computer charges the electrodes that intersect at that cell thousands of times in a small fraction of a second, charging each cell in turn. When the intersecting electrodes are charged (with a voltage difference between them), an electric current flows through the gas in the cell. The current creates a rapid flow of charged particles, which stimulates the gas atoms to release ultraviolet photons. Until quite recently (c. 2004) the superior brightness and viewing angle of color plasma panels, when compared to LCD, made them one of the most popular forms of display for HDTV. However since that time improvements in LCD technology have closed the gap dramatically. The much lower weight, price and power consumption of LCDs have seen them make large inroads into the former plasma market. MVA Many LCDs are driven to darkness by an alternating current, which disrupts the twisting effect, and become faint or transparent when no current is applied. LCDs can be either transmissive or reflective, depending on the location of the light source. A transmissive LCD is illuminated from the back by a backlight and viewed from the opposite side (front). This type of LCD is used in applications requiring high luminance levels such as computer displays, televisions, personal digital assistants, and mobile phones. The illumination device used to illuminate the LCD in such a product usually consumes much more power than the LCD itself. (Patterned Vertical Alignment) is a more advanced version of MVA technology offered by Samsung. Developed independently, it suffers from the same problems as MVA, but boasts the best contrast ratios of any TFT technology. A computer display, monitor or screen is a computer peripheral device capable of showing characters and/or still or moving images generated by a computer and processed by a graphics card. Monitors generally conform to one or more display standards. Sometimes the name "display" suits better than the word "monitor", as the latter term can also ambiguously refer to a "machine-level debugger" or to a "thread synchronization mechanism". Some people also refer to computer displays as "heads", especially when talking about multiple displays connected to a single physical computer.
